A cocktail dress or cocktail gown is a shorter-length lady's party costume worn at cocktail parties and other semi-formal and formal occasions. The length of cocktail gown ranges from just below the knee to tea length (about two inches above the ankle) and sometimes ballerina length (touching the ankle), although ballerina length clothing usually fall into the evening gown category.

Basically a cocktail dress can be of two types. Cocktail dresses in regular size and Plus size Cocktail dresses for larger woman. Famous models include fringed maternity cocktail dress, strapless cocktail dress, twist neck cocktail dress, women suits and black cocktail dresses. Famous materials include silk, satin, chiffon and blend of polyester, nylon or viscose with silk.

For a cocktail dress party costume, a wide variety of clothing materials, styles and accessories like jewelery and dimonds are acceptable. High heel sandals with a matching color suits best; silk, satin and chiffon are always popular choices for cocktail gown party costumes.
